M6 J2 to J4 SMART Motorway Project

Description

For this large scheme, Nusteel Structures were contracted to manufacture and install 39 No new gantry structures, remove and dispose of 28 existing gantries and modify and refurbish 17 existing gantries on the M6 motorway between junctions 2 and 4.

A total of 8 No full access portals gantries ranging in length from 40 to 46 metres, 3 No non access portals gantries up to 42 metres in length, 25 No full access MS4 Cantilever structures and 3 No MS3 Cantilevers were manufactured, fitted out off-site, delivered and installed.

As part of this contract a total of 5 No full access portals gantries and 23 No full access MS3 Cantilever structures were dismantled from site and disposed of at local recycling centres.

17 No existing full access portal gantries required extensive refurbishment and modification works.

4 gantry structures remained in situ on site as these had only minor paint refurbishment works to be completed. These works were carried out during planned lane closures by our NHSS sector 19a qualified paint applicators.

13 No gantries were dismantled on site and transported back to our facility for full refurbishment and modification works.

Materials

The main hollow steel sections are hot rolled to BS EN 10210:2006 S355J2H with the plates and sections to BS EN 10025:2004 S355J2+N. A Highways England Type 2 Zinc rich paint system was applied to all of the structural steelwork.
