Ascot Station AFA Bridge

Description

One of a series of similarly designed ‘Access for All’ bridge structures provided to Osborne Rail for the South West Railway operator. This Arcadis designed footbridge is designed to both reduce congestion during race meetings and greatly improves access facilities with the inclusion of lift shafts to each of the 3 platforms.

The 2 spans and 3 stair structures are of a Vierendeel design with the steel lift shafts being a ladder type bolted type design. In all the steel only weight is just under 95 tonnes. Before entering our finishing department, all steel elements where trial erected at our facility to ensure fit and ease of installation on the lift night. The bridge is finished to a Network Rail N1 paint system.

As part of an all-encompassing package supply, after painting, the bridge sections were fully fitted out at our bridge building operation. This included the fitting of a Standing Seam roof system, double glazed security windows, ceramic tile flooring and AATI cast metal stair nosings.

Due to the tight access of the site, considerable planning of the delivery and site installation activities was necessary. Delivered on our own specialist trailers, the bridge sections were lifted from the station car park with a 750 Tonne Liebherr crane.

This Vierendeel Truss AFA footbridge is made up of 2 spans, 3 staircases and 3 lift shafts. The footbridge was fabricated and installed by Nusteel and provides access to the platforms at the busy ascot station.
