M1 J23A to 25 SMART Motorway

Description

For this large SMART Motorway scheme, Nusteel Structures were contracted to manufacture and install new gantry structures, remove and dispose of existing gantries and modify and refurbish existing gantries on the M1 motorway between junctions 23A and 25.

A total of 3 No full access portals gantries ranging in length from 42 to 56 metres, 12 No full access MS4 Cantilever structures, 4 No full access Long Span Super-cantilever structures and 7 No non-access Super-cantilevers all manufactured, fitted out off-site, delivered directly to site and installed.

4 No full access portals gantries and 2 No full access MS3 Cantilever structures were dismantled from site and disposed of at recycling centres. As part of this contract a total of 19 No existing full access gantries required varied amounts of refurbishment and modification works. These activities were carried out both on site and at our gantry refurbishment facility (off-site).

15 gantry structures remained in situ on site as these required modification works only to be completed. 4 No MS3 gantries were dismantled on site and transported back to our facility for total refurbishment before being reinstalled on the project.

Materials

The main hollow steel sections are hot rolled to BS EN 10210:2006 S355J2H with the plates and sections to BS EN 10025:2004 S355J2+N. A Highways England Type 2 Zinc rich paint system was applied to all of the structural steelwork.
